My Thoughts on Law of Inertia
"Law of Inertia" is quite the ride – a blend of laugh-out-loud moments, emotionally mature romance, and… well, some questionable tropes that definitely need addressing. It's a novel that had me chuckling one minute and raising an eyebrow the next.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a comedic slice-of-life story with a blossoming romance between an indifferent but sensitive MC and a seemingly green flag ML. The premise of the MC's dedication to his craft (acting) and the ML's potential for a fun, teasing dynamic seemed promising. I was ready for some lighthearted entertainment.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a high point. I found myself genuinely laughing at the characters' antics, especially the ML's unpredictable behavior. The emotional maturity in the romance was also a pleasant surprise. The characters, for the most part, respect each other and deal with conflict in a relatively healthy way. The MC's habit of not badmouthing the ML in public, and dealing with issues privately was a refreshing change from the often-toxic dynamics you see in similar stories. The ML's individualistic personality, a contrast to typical CN MLs, was also a welcome touch.
Areas of Concern
Now, for the elephant in the room: the fixation on "top" and "bottom" stereotypes. I understand that these tropes are common in BL novels, but several readers (myself included) found it to be overdone and frankly, quite annoying. The plot revolves heavily around these stereotypes, with the ML even lying about his sexual preferences at one point. It felt like a heteronormative lens being applied to a queer relationship, which is never a good look. I also found that the ML's behavior, while initially quirky, sometimes crossed the line into being forceful and disrespectful, which made me uncomfortable.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the villains in the story felt like "cockroaches," and the lack of serious consequences for their actions was frustrating. Also, the ML buys an island for the MC. Just a heads up.
Final Verdict
"Law of Inertia" is a mixed bag. If you're looking for a comedic and lighthearted read with some genuinely heartwarming moments, you might enjoy it. However, be prepared to wade through some problematic tropes and questionable character behavior. Ultimately, I'd say proceed with caution and adjust your expectations accordingly. The humor and romance are there, but the execution isn't always perfect.
