My Thoughts on Kissing the Mole
"Kissing the Mole" promised a fluffy romance with a showbiz backdrop, and for the most part, it delivered. I went in expecting cute interactions and a bit of a slow burn, and that's pretty much what I got. While it wasn't the most groundbreaking story I've ever read, it was a pleasant way to spend some time.
First Impressions
The initial premise—a star-struck actress chasing after her childhood crush, a somewhat emotionally stunted musician—hooked me right away. The early chapters were filled with lighthearted moments and the promise of some sweet romantic development. I was definitely ready to root for the female lead and her dedication.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its characters. The female lead's unwavering devotion and the male lead's gradual emotional awakening were undeniably charming. I particularly enjoyed the scenes where they were acting, either on screen or on stage; their chemistry really shone through. The author did a great job of creating a lighthearted atmosphere, and the online comment sections were often genuinely funny. I also appreciated the focus on the main couple's relationship development. The side couples, especially Shang Xian and Lin Han, added another layer of interest to the story. Extra 4, focusing on Lin Han and Qin Lou, was surprisingly moving.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall experience, there were a few things that held the story back from being a true standout. I felt like the pacing was a bit slow at times, and the plot could feel monotonous. The focus on the female lead, while understandable, sometimes felt a bit excessive, with other characters revolving around her a little too much. I was also a bit bothered by a specific scene where the female lead pushes the male lead to drink and smoke, despite knowing his aversion to it. It felt disrespectful of his boundaries.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
One plot point that particularly bothered me was the female lead's seemingly easy acceptance of the male lead potentially giving up his music career. Given her history as his biggest fan and the lengths she went to in order to be closer to him, it felt out of character and undermined her previous dedication.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Kissing the Mole" is a cute and fluffy romance that's perfect for readers looking for a lighthearted story with minimal angst. While it has its flaws, the charming characters and sweet interactions make it a worthwhile read, especially if you're a fan of the showbiz romance trope. I'd recommend it with the caveat that you should be prepared for a slower pace and a few moments that might raise an eyebrow.
