My Thoughts on I Won’t Get Drunk With My Nemesis Again
"I Won't Get Drunk With My Nemesis Again" is a completed Chinese BL novel that I recently took a dive into. With a blend of romance, enemies-to-lovers, and a dash of suspense, I was intrigued to see how it all played out. Overall, I found it to be a mixed bag, with some elements really shining while others left me wanting more.
First Impressions
The initial premise definitely grabbed my attention: two men, seemingly at odds, navigating the complexities of the entertainment industry. The tsundere MC and black-bellied ML dynamic seemed like a recipe for some fun bickering and eventual heartwarming romance. I was eager to see their relationship unfold.
What Works Well
The core of the story, the developing relationship between the leads, is undeniably a strong point. I appreciated the gradual softening of the MC towards the ML, which felt relatively natural, even if a bit slow at times. The "doting love interest" trope is definitely in play here, and if that's your thing, you'll likely enjoy the ML's devotion.
There's also a definite entertainment factor. The plot moves at a decent pace, and while there's some "dog blood" drama thrown in, it doesn't linger too long. I also liked that the misunderstandings between the leads were generally resolved fairly quickly, which kept me from getting too frustrated.
Areas of Concern
One of the biggest issues I encountered was the handling of the antagonist. While some found the resolution of the kidnapping arc "cathartic," I felt the storyline itself was unsettling. The attempted r*pe and stalking elements definitely made me uncomfortable, and I can see why some readers might find it difficult to continue.
Another issue that was brought up, and one I tend to agree with, is the ML's behavior. While not necessarily a full-blown "stalker," his actions can come across as manipulative and borderline creepy. If you're not a fan of forceful-wife-chasing dynamics, this might be a red flag.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Be aware that the following contains spoilers regarding plot points.
Several reviews mention a kidnapping arc involving a yandere childhood friend who is obsessed with the MC. The ML liked the MC for 9 years and sent him handmade earrings as an anonymous fan. The second antagonist is the ML's half brother who is after the family affection.
Final Verdict
"I Won't Get Drunk With My Nemesis Again" is a novel with potential that ultimately falls a bit short. It's a decent read for passing the time if you enjoy fluffy romances with a bit of drama and don't mind some potentially problematic character behaviors. However, the handling of the darker elements and the occasional "bland" narration prevent it from being a truly standout read for me.
