My Thoughts on I, the Goblin Emperor, Rule the World
First Impressions
"I, the Goblin Emperor, Rule the World" immediately grabbed my attention with its unique premise. A goblin emperor rising to power and building his empire? It's a refreshing departure from the typical human-centric fantasy stories. I dove in expecting a power fantasy with a monstrous twist, and that's largely what I got.
What Works Well
The novel's strength lies in its ability to deliver consistent entertainment. It's the kind of story you can pick up when you want to unwind and enjoy some "junk food" reading. The world-building, while not overly complex, is sufficient to support the narrative. I found myself particularly invested in the growth of the goblin race. The concept of incorporating different species and bloodlines to strengthen the goblin population is fascinating and reminiscent of strategy games where you're constantly optimizing your forces. This aspect of clan building and army development is a definite highlight. I also appreciated that the author seemed to adjust the narrative as it progressed, introducing female characters that you could dislike, and then enjoy seeing them humbled.
Areas of Concern
One aspect that gave me pause was the heavy focus on breeding and the treatment of female characters. While the author seems to attempt to address this by introducing more morally ambiguous female characters later on, the initial chapters might be off-putting to some readers. There's a definite element of "instant gratification" that permeates the story, which can become repetitive after a while. The lack of explicit descriptions of intimate scenes, due to the novel's SFW nature, also created some ambiguity for me.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
I'm not entirely sure due to the lack of explicit content, but there might be some incest.
Final Verdict
Overall, "I, the Goblin Emperor, Rule the World" is a guilty pleasure novel that delivers on its promise of goblin-centric empire-building and power fantasy. If you're looking for a thought-provoking literary masterpiece, this isn't it. However, if you're in the mood for some escapist fun with a monstrous protagonist, then this novel might just scratch that itch. Just be prepared for some potentially uncomfortable themes and a heavy dose of wish fulfillment. I'd recommend going in with an open mind and the understanding that this is primarily a power fantasy with a unique, albeit morally gray, twist.
