My Thoughts on I Am Not a Master

"I Am Not a Master" immediately grabbed my attention with its quirky premise: a fierce ghost, struck by lightning, becomes human again. It's a blend of comedy, horror, and slice-of-life that promised a unique reading experience, and for the most part, it delivered.

First Impressions

The initial chapters were a whirlwind of misunderstandings and chaotic situations. Our MC, despite becoming human, retains her ghostly nature, leading to hilarious scenarios like wanting to sleep in a coffin and being terrified of Taoists. The setup is undeniably fun, and I was eager to see how she would navigate the human world while trying to make money and find her way back to her treasure hoard.

What Works Well

The strongest aspect of this novel is undoubtedly the protagonist. She's OP in the sense that she can easily handle other ghosts by eating their resentment, but her own body is saturated with evil, which makes her unintentionally terrifying to ordinary people. This juxtaposition creates a lot of comedic gold.

I also appreciated the supporting characters and their stories. They weren't just throwaway additions; they accompanied the MC throughout her journey, adding depth and emotional resonance to the narrative. The author clearly put effort into crafting these individuals, and their interactions with the MC were often heartwarming and entertaining.

Areas of Concern

While I enjoyed the lighthearted tone, I found myself occasionally wanting a bit more depth. The world-building, while not terrible, could have been more fleshed out. There were times when I felt the descriptions were a bit lacking, leading to some confusion. The ending also felt rushed. A time skip and abrupt conclusion left me wanting more closure and a more satisfying resolution to the MC's journey.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

The MC's forgotten past is a central mystery that isn't fully resolved until the very end.

Final Verdict

Despite its minor flaws, "I Am Not a Master" is an entertaining and enjoyable read. If you're looking for a story with a strong, unconventional female lead, plenty of humor, and supernatural elements, this might be right up your alley. I would recommend this to readers seeking a fun, lighthearted adventure with a unique protagonist.

Synopsis

Female Lead: I’m not scary, I’m just too poor. After being struck by lightning and turned into a human, Gu Feiyin couldn’t stop thinking about the gold, silver, jewels, Ghost Money, and Gold Ingots she had hidden in her grave for a hundred years. If she had them now, wouldn’t she be rich? Even though she seemed to bring bad luck wherever she went—blind one day, lame the next, and even choking on water—nothing could stop her from going back home.
