My Thoughts on Futile Calculations
"Futile Calculations" promised a blend of comedy, drama, and romance set against the backdrop of ancient China, and while it delivered on some fronts, other aspects left me feeling a bit conflicted. It's a story that's easy to get lost in, but whether you'll enjoy the journey is another question.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of a naive female lead and a tsundere male lead navigating a world of cultivation and destiny. The early chapters pulled me in with the mystery surrounding the FL's past and the power dynamics between the main characters. There was a definite 'will they, won't they' vibe that kept me turning the page.
What Works Well
I appreciated the translator's work, as I found the prose flowed well and made for a smooth reading experience. The side characters definitely added some much-needed humor and depth to the story. I found myself invested in their individual arcs, even if the overall plot had its weak points. The initial setup of the FL being intentionally made "dumb" for her own safety was an interesting twist, and the slow-burn romance (at least in the beginning) had its charming moments.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I started to see some of the issues that other readers have pointed out. The FL's naivete, while initially understandable, sometimes felt excessive and frustrating. The world-building felt somewhat underdeveloped, and the plot occasionally felt rushed, leaving some questions unanswered by the end. The motivations of some characters felt shallow, and the dramatic backstories sometimes bordered on the absurd. I also had some concerns about the age gap and power imbalance between the leads, which made some of their interactions uncomfortable to read.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed strong opinions about specific character deaths and plot developments, feeling that they were unnecessary or poorly executed. In particular, the fate of one supporting character seemed to generate a lot of frustration, with some feeling that their tragic end was simply for shock value and didn't serve the story.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Futile Calculations" is a mixed bag. While it has its moments of sweetness, humor, and intrigue, it's also plagued by some questionable plot choices, underdeveloped world-building, and potentially problematic character dynamics. If you're looking for a light read with a focus on romance and don't mind overlooking some flaws, you might find it enjoyable. However, if you prefer stories with strong world-building, well-developed characters, and nuanced relationships, this might not be the one for you. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, with the caveat that it's best approached with tempered expectations.
