My Thoughts on Doomed by Fate, My Sect Urges My Comeback
"Doomed by Fate, My Sect Urges My Comeback" had me hooked from the premise alone – a reborn protagonist, Mo Yu, just trying to chill in her sect after failing to ascend, but fate (and her sect) have other plans. I dove in eager for some lighthearted cultivation shenanigans, and for a good chunk of the story, that's exactly what I got.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were a blast. The comedy landed perfectly, and the whole "misfortune" angle leading to Mo Yu's sectmates constantly pushing her to cultivate despite her laziness was genuinely funny. It felt like a refreshing take on the reincarnation trope, focusing more on slice-of-life moments within a xianxia world than your typical revenge plot.
What Works Well
The character portrayals are a strong point. Each character, even the minor ones, felt like they had their own motivations and agency. I appreciated how the author gave realistic reasons for their actions, making the world feel more alive and less like a stage for the MC's exploits. The mysteries surrounding the inability to ascend also kept me engaged, providing a good balance to the comedic elements. The world building was well done and I felt the translation was well done.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, I have to address the elephant in the room: the ending. It felt incredibly abrupt, cutting off mid-arc without resolving any of the major plot threads. The mysteries surrounding ascension remained unsolved, leaving me with a sense of frustration and disappointment. I was left hanging and wanting more.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have noted that the main antagonist becomes a drag on the story. Apparently, the MC is significantly stronger than the villain from the start but repeatedly chooses not to deal with her, which stretches the plot in an unsatisfying way. I can see how that would become tiresome. Also, the original chosen protagonist dies and her system merges with the MC's.
Final Verdict
Despite the abrupt ending and some potential pacing issues with the antagonist, I found "Doomed by Fate, My Sect Urges My Comeback" to be an enjoyable read. The comedy is on point, the characters are well-developed, and the overall premise is intriguing. However, be warned: if you decide to embark on this journey, prepare yourself for a cliffhanger that might leave you feeling cheated. If you're looking for a light-hearted cultivation novel with a strong focus on humor, this might be worth checking out, just keep your expectations in check regarding the ending.
