My Thoughts on Back to the High School Days of Iceberg Omega
"Back to the High School Days of Iceberg Omega" is a completed Chinese web novel that I recently dove into, and it's a story that definitely left me with some mixed feelings. The premise, featuring a cold omega and a golden retriever alpha in a high school setting, sounded right up my alley. While it had its charms, some elements held it back from being a truly standout read for me.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were quite engaging. The setup, with Jiang Shuyi transmigrating back to her high school days, was intriguing, and the early interactions between her and Wen Yao, the "Iceberg Omega," were promising. I was immediately drawn to the potential of their relationship dynamic, especially the contrast between Jiang Shuyi's warmth and Wen Yao's stoicism.
What Works Well
The core romance between Jiang Shuyi and Wen Yao is undoubtedly the strongest aspect of the novel. Jiang Shuyi's unwavering devotion and efforts to break through Wen Yao's icy exterior were heartwarming to witness. The "omegaverse" aspect is also well-integrated, adding another layer to their relationship. The writing style is smooth and easy to follow, making it a relatively quick and enjoyable read.
Areas of Concern
One aspect that gave me pause was the dynamic between the two leads. I found myself sympathizing with Jiang Shuyi, who puts in considerable effort to build a connection with Wen Yao. Wen Yao's consistent coldness, even after they get together, can be frustrating. While I understand her character's backstory and emotional walls, it sometimes felt like she wasn't reciprocating Jiang Shuyi's feelings adequately.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might find the handling of a particular side character, Xiao Jiayu, problematic. The reveal that he played a role in Jiang Shuyi's past failures felt somewhat contrived and unnecessary, and his motivations were questionable. This plot point detracted from my overall enjoyment of the story.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Back to the High School Days of Iceberg Omega" is an okay read if you're looking for a relatively simple and sweet yuri romance with omegaverse elements. While it has its flaws, the core relationship between the leads is compelling enough to keep you invested. Just be prepared for some potentially frustrating character dynamics and a plot twist that might not sit well with everyone. I'd recommend it with reservations, leaning towards a 3.5/5.
