Lin Ling is a little mushroom spirit growing on the beam of the Imperial study, and every day, he watches the tyrant’s daily routine—confiscating property, exile, and executing the nine clans.
The little mushroom has no particular opinion about this, except that the small flower pot he uses to bask in the moonlight always gets innocently implicated, along with memorials that are smashed to the ground.
So, he enters the tyrant’s dreams daily to complain, and the tyrant gives him a new flower pot in return.
Lin Ling was on the beam, looking at his newly acquired flower pot, and was happily imagining moving in when the tyrant got angry again.
The moment the tyrant raised his hand, Lin Ling immediately and nervously whispered, “When you get angry and start smashing things later, please don’t break my new flower pot again, okay?”
The hall instantly fell silent, and under everyone’s gaze, the tyrant turned around and moved the flower pot to a different location.
The ministers, who trembled in fear and dared not take another glance, belatedly realized that the ruthless emperor was also learning how to take care of a soft, small mushroom.

## My Thoughts on The Imperial Handbook to Raising Mushrooms
"The Imperial Handbook to Raising Mushrooms" promised a fluffy, feel-good story, and for the most part, it delivered. This short novel, blending historical, romance, and xuanhuan elements, centers around a naive mushroom spirit and a seemingly tyrannical emperor. The premise alone hooked me, and I was eager to dive in.
### First Impressions
I was immediately charmed by the cuteness of the story. The dynamic between the innocent Lin Ling (the mushroom) and the doting Shi Changyuan (the emperor) is undeniably sweet. It's a light, easy read perfect for when you need a dose of fluff and low-stakes romance. The initial chapters are delightful, setting up a classic "tyrant falls for innocent" scenario.
### What Works Well
The novel excels in its simplicity. The plot is straightforward, focusing primarily on the development of the relationship between the mushroom and the emperor. Many readers, including myself, appreciated the lack of unnecessary drama and misunderstandings. The author does a great job of portraying the emperor's patience and affection towards the MC, especially considering his "tyrannical" reputation. It's also quite funny seeing how the MC learns about love and relationships through "storybooks" of questionable genres. The story is cute and wholesome, a real heart warmer.
### Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall sweetness, I do have some reservations. Some found the mushroom spirit a little *too* naive, even for a mushroom, which could be a bit grating at times. The pacing felt rushed to me, particularly in the development of their feelings for each other. The ending also felt abrupt, I would have loved to see a bit more fleshed out.
### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers had issues with a plot point where the Emperor considers dark magic to bind the mushroom to him. It's a definite tonal shift and might not sit well with everyone seeking pure fluff.
### Final Verdict
Despite its minor flaws, "The Imperial Handbook to Raising Mushrooms" is an enjoyable read. If you're looking for a short, sweet, and relatively low-angst novel with a charming romance, this might be right up your alley. I would rate this a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's not groundbreaking, but it's a delightful little gem.
