My Thoughts on Working as a Simp
"Working as a Simp" definitely delivered on its comedic promise, and while the premise is a bit out there, I found myself charmed by the story's quirky characters and lighthearted tone. This isn't a deep, philosophical read, but it's a delightful escape with plenty of laughs.
First Impressions
The initial setup is undeniably strange: a rich, somewhat naive, young master hiring a hardworking college student as essentially a live-in maid. The power dynamic raised a few eyebrows, and I can see how some might find it off-putting at first. However, the humor quickly won me over, and I was eager to see how this unusual relationship would develop.
What Works Well
The female lead, Lin Wan Yue, is a standout. Her dedication to earning money and her unbothered attitude towards what others think are incredibly endearing. She's not afraid to stand her ground, even with her wealthy boss, which leads to some hilarious situations. I especially enjoyed how she maintained her principles, often taking the upper hand in the relationship despite the initial power imbalance.
The male lead, Jiang An, is equally entertaining. He starts as an aloof and somewhat manipulative character, seemingly using money to control the situation. However, he's quickly won over by Lin Wan Yue's diligence and strong work ethic. His naivete regarding emotions and common sense, especially when viewed through his perspective in the extra chapters, adds another layer of humor. Their comedic interactions and the gradual development of their feelings, even if somewhat lacking in explicit confession, were a highlight for me. The parents were also a plus!
Areas of Concern
The romance felt a bit rushed at times, with the leads struggling to be honest about their feelings. The initial power dynamic might still bother some readers, even with the comedic spin. I can see how some readers might find the male lead's continued reliance on money to influence the female lead, even as their relationship progresses, a bit problematic.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
There are a couple of instances worth noting that could be considered spoilers. One involves the male lead's initial motivation for hiring the female lead and another involves two proposals.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Working as a Simp" is a fun and engaging read, especially if you're looking for a lighthearted romantic comedy. While the premise is unconventional and the romance could be more developed, the hilarious characters, witty banter, and feel-good atmosphere make it a worthwhile experience. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys quirky romances with a strong comedic element.
