My Thoughts on Who Killed The Hero?

"Who Killed The Hero?" immediately grabbed my attention with its intriguing premise. In a genre saturated with overpowered main characters and predictable isekai tropes, this novel promised something different, something deeper. I dove in hoping for a story that would challenge my expectations, and I wasn't disappointed.

First Impressions

The initial chapters have a distinct Final Fantasy VII flashback vibe, which I found immediately appealing. The story unfolds through multiple points of view, painting a picture of the hero and his party through the eyes of those who knew them. This narrative structure, while initially jarring, ultimately proved to be one of the novel's greatest strengths. It allows for a gradual unveiling of secrets and a more nuanced understanding of the characters.

What Works Well

The emotional depth of this story is truly remarkable. "Who Killed The Hero?" isn't afraid to explore themes of love, loss, and sacrifice, and it does so with a raw honesty that resonated deeply with me. The plot twists are genuinely shocking, and the underlying story is surprisingly profound. The characters are well-developed and surprisingly caring, and the author does a great job of creating a world that feels both fantastical and grounded. The story feels like a stage play, and is an improvement on classical fantasy stories.

Areas of Concern

I did find that the frequent shifts in perspective could be a little confusing at times, particularly in the dialogue. It occasionally became difficult to discern who was speaking, which momentarily disrupted my immersion. Also, the ending felt a little bland for me, it was good but I had expected more. I was also reading a poorly translated version, so some details may have been lost in translation.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

I can see that some readers have expressed strong reactions to certain plot developments, particularly regarding a tragic event early on and a major reveal later in the story. If you're sensitive to potentially heartbreaking content, proceed with caution.

Final Verdict

Despite a few minor shortcomings, "Who Killed The Hero?" is a truly exceptional web novel. It's a bittersweet, thought-provoking story that will stay with you long after you finish reading. If you're looking for something that transcends the typical fantasy fare, I highly recommend giving this one a try. I'd rate it a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Synopsis

There was a prophet who declared, “A hero who will defeat the Demon King will appear from this village.” The village believed in the prophecy because there was a boy who was skilled in swordsmanship and magic. Eight years later, the boy became a hero and defeated the Demon King. However, at the same time, he became a person who would never return. Why did the hero die? Four years after his death, as his achievements were being compiled into literature, the truth behind his death was about to be revealed.
