My Thoughts on The Alchemist’s Handmade Crafts ~ Just Running a Flea Market, Yet Treated as Legendary ~
This novel, The Alchemist’s Handmade Crafts, definitely carves out a niche for itself within the fantasy genre. It’s got that "oblivious protagonist inadvertently shaking up the world" vibe, which, when done well, can be incredibly charming. However, my experience was a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
The premise is undeniably appealing: an alchemist who's more interested in crafting cute trinkets than churning out powerful potions. The idea of her creations accidentally becoming legendary items because of her overpowered alchemy is pretty funny. I was initially drawn in by the potential for lighthearted adventure and whimsical world-building.
What Works Well
The concept of Aoi's alchemy leading to accidental greatness is definitely a strong point. The story seems to lean into the reactions of the world around her, which can be entertaining. If you enjoy stories where a character's actions, however unintentional, have widespread consequences, this might be up your alley. There is a certain charm to the wholesome tone.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, there are some significant issues that held me back from fully enjoying the story. One of the biggest problems seems to be the quality of the translation. Several instances of pronoun mix-ups, particularly regarding the main character's gender, can make it difficult to follow the narrative and connect with the characters. This is a serious issue, as it makes the reading experience confusing and diminishes the impact of character interactions. The story telling sometimes relies on the side characters to keep the story interesting, which results in the main character feeling omnipotent.
Final Verdict
The Alchemist’s Handmade Crafts has a fun premise and some genuinely appealing elements, but the issues with translation and storytelling are hard to ignore. If you're willing to overlook these flaws, you might find some enjoyment in the story's lighthearted tone and the protagonist's accidental impact on the world. However, I'd recommend approaching it with caution and hoping for improvements in the translation quality. As it stands, I'd rate it a cautious 3/5.
