My Thoughts on Sword of Gluttony Princess
"Sword of Gluttony Princess" is a web novel that piqued my interest with its intriguing premise and beautiful art. However, after diving in, I found myself with mixed feelings. It's a story with potential, but one that struggles with execution in key areas.
First Impressions
The initial hook of a weak protagonist gaining a powerful ability is classic shounen, and I was eager to see how the author would subvert or play with the familiar tropes. The world-building, centered around dungeons and a unique weapon system, also seemed promising. There's definitely a certain charm to the concept, and I can see why some readers are drawn in.
What Works Well
The action sequences are a definite highlight. The author showcases the main character using his newfound powers in creative ways to overcome stronger enemies. It's satisfying to see the MC struggle and adapt, making the fights feel tense and engaging. The demon aspects were also unique. The blend of action, adventure, and fantasy elements creates a world ripe for exploration.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the main character's naivete, which often crosses the line into frustrating stupidity. He repeatedly makes rash decisions, putting himself and his companions in danger, and seems to learn very little from his mistakes. This lack of growth makes it hard to root for him, despite the author's attempts to portray him as a caring protagonist.
The writing style can also be a bit heavy-handed, with excessive exposition that slows down the pacing. At times, I felt like I was being told rather than shown, which detracted from my immersion in the story. The plot predictability is also a problem, especially when it comes to betrayals.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have pointed out specific instances of the MC's naivete leading to predictable betrayals. One example involves the character Gilbert, whose actions and subsequent "redemption" felt forced and unearned. Another betrayal involving a character named Fredo was so obvious that it became unintentionally comedic.
Final Verdict
"Sword of Gluttony Princess" is a flawed but not entirely unredeemable web novel. While the action and world-building have their moments, the frustrating protagonist and predictable plot prevent it from reaching its full potential. If you're a fan of standard shounen fantasy and can overlook the MC's shortcomings, you might find some enjoyment here. However, if you're looking for a more nuanced and intelligent story, you may want to look elsewhere. Overall, I'd give it a tentative 2.5 out of 5 stars.
