My Thoughts on Revenge

"Revenge" is a short, sharp punch to the gut, leaving you breathless and emotionally drained. This isn't a light read; it's a dive into the darkest corners of grief, injustice, and the lengths we'll go to for family. I went into it knowing it was a tragedy, but I still wasn't prepared for the emotional rollercoaster.

First Impressions

From the very first chapter, I was hooked. The author immediately establishes the close bond between the two brothers, and you can feel the love and protectiveness they have for each other. This strong foundation makes the subsequent tragedy all the more devastating. The pacing is quick, which is expected for a short story, but it also means the impact is immediate and unrelenting.

What Works Well

The raw emotion is definitely the strongest aspect of this novel. The author masterfully portrays the protagonist's grief, rage, and despair. I found myself completely invested in his journey, rooting for him even as he walked a morally ambiguous path. The novel also touches on very real and disturbing themes of social inequality and the abuse of power. The idea that the wealthy can often escape justice, while the less fortunate suffer, is a harsh reality that the story doesn't shy away from.

Areas of Concern

Given the story's brevity, the character development felt a bit rushed in places. While I understood the protagonist's motivations, I would have appreciated a bit more depth to the supporting characters, even if just to add to the tragedy. Also, while the brotherly love was a core strength, it bordered on slightly idealized at times, which made it feel a little less believable.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

The ending, while fitting, was incredibly painful. I understand the protagonist's desire for revenge and his willingness to sacrifice everything for his brother, but it still left me with a lingering sense of sadness and emptiness. The fact that he dies in the end, while perhaps narratively consistent, was difficult to accept after witnessing his suffering.

Final Verdict

Despite its flaws, "Revenge" is a powerful and thought-provoking story. It's not a comfortable read, but it's one that will stay with you long after you finish it. If you're looking for a quick but impactful story that explores themes of grief, justice, and the complexities of human nature, I would recommend giving this a read, just be prepared to shed a few tears. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
