My Thoughts on Kiraina Otoko
"Kiraina Otoko" is a sweet and surprisingly mature office romance that really grabbed my attention. I went in expecting a fluffy read, and while it definitely delivers on the lightheartedness, I was also impressed by the emotional depth and character development. It's a quick read, but the story manages to pack a punch.
First Impressions
From the get-go, I was intrigued by the premise. Chihiro, our protagonist, is a salaryman who feels a bit inadequate, especially when the talented and handsome Mukai joins his department. Their initial dynamic is filled with a relatable mix of jealousy and begrudging respect, and I was immediately invested in seeing how their relationship would unfold. The office setting provides a great backdrop for their interactions, making the slice-of-life aspects truly shine.
What Works Well
The character development is a major highlight. Chihiro's journey from a somewhat narcissistic and insecure individual to someone who acknowledges his flaws and strives to be better is genuinely compelling. I found myself rooting for him, even when he made questionable choices. Mukai, with his own past experiences influencing his cautious approach to relationships, is equally well-developed. The author does a fantastic job of portraying their anxieties and vulnerabilities, making their connection feel authentic.
The romance itself is beautifully written. It's not just about surface-level attraction; it delves into the complexities of their emotions and the challenges they face in navigating their relationship. I appreciated the balance between the lighthearted moments and the deeper, more angsty ones. The author really knows how to tug at your heartstrings.

Several readers mentioned that Mukai's worries about their relationship in the epilogue added another layer of depth, making his character even more sympathetic.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Kiraina Otoko" is a delightful read that I would happily recommend. If you're looking for a well-written, character-driven office romance with a touch of angst and a satisfying resolution, this novel is definitely worth checking out. It's a testament to the author's skill in crafting relatable characters and weaving a compelling story within a relatively short timeframe. I'm already planning on exploring more of Anzai Rika's work!
