My Thoughts on Hermit Crab
"Hermit Crab" is a completed yaoi novel that definitely left an impression. With its blend of adult themes, romance, and drama, it's a story that pulls you in, even if it does have a few quirks along the way. Overall, I found it to be a worthwhile read, though not without its flaws.
First Impressions
I went into this novel knowing it was a bit of a rollercoaster. The initial setup is…unconventional, to say the least. We're introduced to a wealthy ML with a string of exes and a Shou who finds himself in a precarious situation. The power dynamic is skewed from the start, and the initial interactions definitely raised some eyebrows. It's a far cry from the typical "boy meets boy" scenario, and the ML's actions early on are morally questionable, bordering on scummy.
What Works Well
Despite the rocky start, the novel shines in its character development and the evolving relationship between the leads. The ML's transformation from a playboy to a devoted partner is genuinely compelling. He's flawed, yes, but his willingness to change and his gentle treatment of the MC after their initial conflict is endearing.
The MC himself is a breath of fresh air. He's described as naive yet observant, playful, and honest about his feelings. He's not afraid to be proactive in the relationship, which leads to a dynamic that feels surprisingly balanced and sweet. The fact that the characters communicate and work through their issues, rather than letting misunderstandings fester, is a major plus.
Areas of Concern
The initial power imbalance and the ML's early actions are definitely a point of contention. Some readers might find it difficult to look past the voyeurism and the manipulative tactics used to keep the MC around. Additionally, the handling of the ML's exes could have been better. While the ML eventually addresses their problematic behavior, it takes a while, and their actions definitely impact the MC negatively. The ending also feels somewhat abrupt. I would have loved to see more of the aftermath, especially how the ML's family reacted to the relationship.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, here's where we get into some potential spoilers. The ML initially monitors the MC through surveillance with the intention of turning him in for theft. He even plans with his friends to catch the MC. This is a major point of contention for some readers and could be a trigger for others. However, it's also the catalyst for their relationship, as the ML falls in love with the MC and decides to keep him instead. The ML had previously filmed the MC without permission and tried to threaten the MC multiple times with nude pics.
Final Verdict
"Hermit Crab" is a flawed but ultimately enjoyable read. It's a story about two imperfect people finding love and growing together. If you're willing to overlook the morally gray areas and appreciate the character development, you might find yourself charmed by this sweet and fluffy tale. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
