My Thoughts on Frontier Magic Pharmacist
Frontier Magic Pharmacist is a web novel that initially grabbed my attention with its premise: a protagonist reincarnated with a mission to revolutionize potion-making in a world stuck in its ways. The blend of isekai and slice-of-life seemed promising, and I was eager to see how the main character (MC) would tackle this challenge.
First Impressions
At first, I was hooked. The initial chapters laid a good foundation, introducing the world, the magic system, and the MC's unique situation. The idea of him using his modern knowledge to improve alchemy felt fresh and exciting. I was ready for some serious potion brewing and world-changing innovations.
What Works Well
The novel shines when it focuses on the MC's inventive spirit and his interactions with his family. I particularly enjoyed the moments where he uses his knowledge to create helpful items and improve the lives of those around him. The slice-of-life elements are generally well-executed, offering a relaxing and comfortable reading experience. There's definitely a charm to watching him develop new magical tools and concoctions. The overall world building isn't bad either, the author does a good job of making the world feel alive.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I found myself becoming increasingly frustrated. While the slice-of-life aspects are enjoyable, they often overshadow the main plot. The MC's initial goal of improving potion-making seems to get lost amidst the various side quests and daily activities. I noticed a lot of the focus shifts away from potion making and more towards creating random magical items. The action and adventure tags feel misleading, as these elements are few and far between.
Also, the MC's personality can be a bit inconsistent. At times, he's portrayed as a level-headed and resourceful individual, but at other times, he comes across as somewhat passive and easily swayed by others. His relationships with some characters also felt underdeveloped, like a particular romance that was cut short.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the MC's reaction to his grandparents' death felt strangely detached and unemotional, which can be off-putting. Also, there is a bit of a plot hole in regards to blaming his knowledge on a book he inherited from his grandmother.
Final Verdict
Overall, Frontier Magic Pharmacist is a decent read if you're looking for a light and fluffy slice-of-life isekai with minimal action. However, if you're expecting a strong focus on potion-making and a compelling overarching plot, you might be disappointed. I give it a 3 out of 5. It has its moments, but it ultimately falls short of its initial potential.
