My Thoughts on Follow Behind Silk Curtains
"Follow Behind Silk Curtains" promised a sweet romance wrapped in a xianxia world, and for the most part, it delivered. It's a story about a love that transcends death and reincarnation, and honestly, that's a trope I'm always a sucker for.
First Impressions
From the get-go, I was drawn in by the premise: a powerful demon cultivator who goes practically mad with grief after his master's death, spending a century trying to revive her. The whole idea of him becoming a renowned artifact refiner, creating helpful (and cheap!) puppets and machines just added to the appeal. It felt unique and immediately piqued my interest.
What Works Well
The romance is undoubtedly the heart of this story. I found myself completely invested in the relationship between the MC and ML. The ML is a standout character; cold and ruthless to everyone else, but utterly devoted, even timid, with the MC. The dynamic of a powerful demon lord turning into a shy, obedient puppy around his love interest is just chef's kiss. I also appreciated that the MC, despite being oblivious initially, grows into a strong and determined character, willing to fight for their love. The side characters and world-building were enjoyable as well. The author does a good job of making the world feel alive, with characters who have their own motivations and backstories.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel overall, I did find the pacing a bit uneven. Some parts felt rushed, while others dragged on. Also, the "cyberpunk" tag feels like a stretch, as the story only contains enchanted tin puppets, not enough to be considered cyberpunk. The ending also felt a bit abrupt. It would have been nice to see a more fleshed-out conclusion, with more closure for the side characters and a more detailed resolution to the main conflict.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, here's where I'm going to get into some more specific details that might spoil the story for you.
The initial chapters detailing the ML's grief and desperate attempts to revive the MC were particularly poignant. The image of him using his blood in a ritual, accumulating countless scars over the years, really tugged at my heartstrings. Also, the fact that the MC reincarnates into a child's body adds an interesting dynamic to their reunion.
Final Verdict
Despite some pacing issues and a rushed ending, "Follow Behind Silk Curtains" is a worthwhile read, especially if you're a fan of sweet romances with devoted male leads. The unique premise, engaging characters, and heartfelt relationship between the MC and ML make it a memorable story. I'd recommend giving it a try if you're looking for a shorter, satisfying xianxia romance.
