My Thoughts on Concubine Favored Over Wife? I Refuse to Be the Lady of This Marquis House
This novel's title definitely grabbed my attention, and after diving in, I can see why it has a solid following, even if it doesn't quite reach "masterpiece" status. It's a decent read, especially if you're looking for something to pass the time with familiar tropes and satisfying face-slapping moments.
First Impressions
The premise is classic rebirth: Lin Yunwan gets a second chance at life and decides she's done with her neglectful husband and his awful mistress. I was immediately invested in her desire for a divorce and freedom, and the initial arc where she subtly undermines the mistress and schemes for her own escape was quite engaging. The story starts strong, setting up the world and characters.
What Works Well
I really enjoyed the main character, Lin Yunwan. She's clever and determined, and I appreciated that she wasn't solely focused on revenge. Her relationships with her adopted son, Lu Changgong, and her brother were particularly well-developed. The author does a good job of portraying the social injustices of the time, where a husband favoring a concubine was considered a major scandal. The slow-burn romance with Prince Huan (Qi Lingheng), the male lead, has its moments, even if it isn't the most fiery relationship I've read. I liked that he accepted her past marriage and didn't insist on polygamy. Some of the side characters, like the initially spoiled half-sister who finds happiness in a simple life, also added depth to the story.
Areas of Concern
While the novel is entertaining, it does have some shortcomings. The middle section, where Lin Yunwan assumes a new identity, felt a bit drawn out. The romance, while wholesome, lacked a certain spark, and the male lead's sudden declaration of love felt a bit out of the blue. I also felt that some plot points, like the conflict with the crown prince, were brushed aside without proper resolution. The translation quality can be inconsistent at times, which can be distracting.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers felt the ending for the ex-husband and his son was too harsh, considering their actions. Others noted that the adopted son's coldness towards his nominal father seemed out of character.
Final Verdict
Overall, Concubine Favored Over Wife? I Refuse to Be the Lady of This Marquis House is a decent read if you're in the mood for a historical romance with a strong female lead and satisfying revenge plots. It might not be groundbreaking, but it offers enough entertainment to keep you engaged. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
