My Thoughts on Blackstone Code
"Blackstone Code" plunges you into a world ripe for economic exploitation, and as a reader, I found myself strangely captivated by the protagonist's ruthless ambition. It's a novel that doesn't shy away from morally gray areas, and that's part of its appeal.
First Impressions
My initial impression was a mix of intrigue and slight bewilderment. The setting feels like a distorted mirror of early 20th-century America, with technological advancements and social norms colliding in unexpected ways. This is no straight historical fiction; it's an alternate world with its own quirky rules and power dynamics. If you are looking for a straight historical fiction, this may not be the novel for you.
What Works Well
The core strength of "Blackstone Code" lies in its protagonist and the focus on economic maneuvering. The MC isn't your typical hero; he's a capitalist through and through, willing to bend the rules and exploit opportunities to achieve his goals. I enjoyed the intricate web of schemes and manipulations as he builds his empire. The world-building, while sometimes inconsistent, provides a solid backdrop for the MC's rise to power. The author does a great job of giving enough world building context to understand the situation without giving too much info that bogs down the story. The story also has a really nice way of implementing actions and consequences that make sense, and the way the MC manipulates the situations to his advantage are always great.
Areas of Concern
One aspect that some might find jarring is the world's inconsistent technological and social development. You might find some parts of the world that are not believable, such as the tech tree being strange, with basically every household having TVs but even top tier luxury cars don't have a radio or AC. The lack of romance might also be a deal-breaker for some readers. The novel is heavily focused on economic and political intrigue, leaving little room for romantic subplots (at least, from what I've read so far).
Final Verdict
Despite its quirks and potential pacing issues, "Blackstone Code" is a compelling read for those who enjoy morally ambiguous protagonists, intricate economic strategies, and a world that's just a little bit off-kilter. If you're looking for a traditional hero and a straightforward plot, this might not be your cup of tea. However, if you're willing to embrace the gray areas and delve into a world of cunning and manipulation, "Blackstone Code" offers a unique and engaging experience.
