My Thoughts on Black Bellied President Dotes on Wife
"Black Bellied President Dotes on Wife" is quite the ride! It's a blend of modern romance tropes with a healthy dose of drama, and while it definitely has its flaws, it kept me entertained. I can see why it has a solid, but not perfect, overall rating.
First Impressions
The initial chapters grabbed my attention. The female lead, Shuangguan Ning, isn't a celebrity, which is a nice change of pace. I appreciated that she has a sharp tongue and isn't afraid to stand up for herself. The male lead, Jing Yichen, comes on strong, practically forcing her into marriage early on. It's a bold move that sets the stage for a somewhat unconventional romance.
What Works Well
The plot moves at a good pace, and there are plenty of engaging elements. The author weaves together multiple couples and storylines, spanning generations. I enjoyed the variety of romantic pairings, from a genius doctor chasing his ex to a brother and adopted sister love story. The mysteries surrounding Jing Yichen's past and the heroine's mother's death added layers of intrigue. I also liked that there were other "good" female characters. Too often these stories only allow one strong female character.
Areas of Concern
However, some aspects of the story felt a little…off. The forced marriage trope, while common, wasn't handled perfectly. Shuangguan Ning seems to accept it a little too easily, and I found myself wishing she'd push back more. Also, the villains can be cartoonishly stupid, which undermines the intelligence of the main characters. The level of violence is also a concern, some readers may find it excessive and unrealistic.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Be warned, the following contains spoilers!
Some readers may find the female lead to be too soft-hearted. It's frustrating to see her repeatedly walk into dangerous situations, requiring the male lead to rescue her. The constant attempts on her life, including multiple rape attempts, become repetitive and almost comical. Also, the use of aphrodisiacs as a plot device is overdone.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Black Bellied President Dotes on Wife" is an entertaining but flawed read. If you're a fan of modern romance with a strong dose of drama and don't mind some over-the-top violence and unrealistic scenarios, you might enjoy it. But be prepared for a rollercoaster ride of emotions and a plot that occasionally veers into the absurd.
