My Thoughts on Be Happier Than Me
"Be Happier Than Me" is a short and poignant story that definitely left an impression. While it might not be the kind of novel to leave me sobbing uncontrollably, it certainly tugged at my heartstrings and made me reflect on the complexities of love, loss, and sacrifice.
First Impressions
The premise immediately intrigued me: a shounen ai tragedy centered around childhood friends and unrequited love. I went in expecting angst, but I was pleasantly surprised by the story's overall tone. It's heartbreaking, yes, but not overwhelmingly so. The narrative focuses on the MC's perspective, giving a very intimate view of his feelings.
What Works Well
I appreciated the realistic portrayal of unrequited love. The MC's devotion to the ML is incredibly pure and selfless. His desire for the ML's happiness, even at his own expense, is a powerful theme that resonated with me. The plot is simple, focusing on the emotional journey of the main character. There aren't many unnecessary dramas, which makes the story feel very real and relatable, especially if you've experienced a similar situation. The ending, while sad, felt fitting and respectful to the characters.
Areas of Concern
Given the story's short length, I felt like I wanted more exploration of the ML's character and his feelings. I think the story could have benefited from a deeper dive into his perspective, especially after the MC's passing. While I understand the narrative choice to focus on the MC, expanding on the ML's emotional response could have added another layer of depth and closure to the story.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may find the ML's mother's revelation at the end somewhat questionable. Her timing felt a little off, and the potential consequences for the ML and his family could be seen as unnecessarily adding guilt and sadness.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Be Happier Than Me" is a worthwhile read if you're looking for a short, emotional story about unrequited love and sacrifice. While it may not be a perfect novel, it's a touching portrayal of a character who prioritizes the happiness of another above his own. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading.
