My Thoughts on Ascendance of a Scummy Hero
"Ascendance of a Scummy Hero" promised a protagonist with a bit of an edge, and while my experience wasn't quite what I expected, I still found aspects to enjoy. It's a bit of a mixed bag, so let's dive in.
First Impressions
Going into this, I was intrigued by the "scummy hero" concept. I was hoping for a protagonist who was maybe morally grey, but ultimately driven to do the right thing. The initial setup, with a lazy, average-looking guy suddenly thrust into a world of holy swords and secret missions, definitely grabbed my attention. The early interactions and world-building were enough to keep me invested.
What Works Well
The world itself feels alive, and the characters, despite some criticisms, are interesting. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between the protagonist and the sentient holy sword. The author does a good job of highlighting the issues surrounding the use of these powerful swords, hinting at deeper secrets and conspiracies within the world. The story has an adventure that is unique and interesting. The author is constantly pointing out problems, and the characters feel alive. The romantic subplot, with the hints of a harem forming around the MC, adds a lighthearted touch that I found enjoyable.
Areas of Concern
However, I can't ignore some of the criticisms I share with other readers. The "scummy" aspect of the hero seems to be missing, or at least understated. He comes across more as spineless and indecisive than genuinely cunning or self-serving. This disconnect between the title and the actual character can be a bit jarring. I also share concerns about the plot becoming a bit convoluted later on. The introduction of new elements and abilities felt somewhat random.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have expressed frustration with plot developments in later volumes, specifically regarding inconsistencies in the magic system and the behavior of certain characters. There's also speculation about the protagonist's potential future role as a Demon King.
Final Verdict
"Ascendance of a Scummy Hero" is a fun, albeit flawed, read. If you're looking for a truly scummy protagonist, you might be disappointed. However, if you enjoy a lighthearted fantasy adventure with a unique world, an unwilling hero, and a touch of romance, this might be worth checking out. Just be aware that the plot may become a bit uneven as the story progresses. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, with the caveat that your mileage may vary.
