"Ascendance of a Scummy Hero" promised a protagonist with a bit of an edge, and while my experience wasn't quite what I expected, I still found aspects to enjoy. It's a bit of a mixed bag, so let's dive in.

Going into this, I was intrigued by the "scummy hero" concept. I was hoping for a protagonist who was maybe morally grey, but ultimately driven to do the right thing. The initial setup, with a lazy, average-looking guy suddenly thrust into a world of holy swords and secret missions, definitely grabbed my attention. The early interactions and world-building were enough to keep me invested.
What Works Well
The world itself feels alive, and the characters, despite some criticisms, are interesting. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between the protagonist and the sentient holy sword.
