My Thoughts on A Scumbag Always Gets What He Deserves
This novel, with its provocative title, turned out to be quite the surprise! I went in expecting a face-slapping revenge story, but what I found was a surprisingly sweet and fluffy romance set against a backdrop of cruel aristocracy.
First Impressions
The initial chapters pulled me in with the premise of a modern jewelry and fragrance maker transmigrating into a Game of Thrones-esque world. I was immediately intrigued by the contrast between the MC's modern sensibilities and the decadent, often brutal, society he found himself in. The European ambience and focus on 18th-century fashion were a refreshing change from the usual danmei settings.
What Works Well
The heart of this story lies in the relationship between the MC and the ML. Their dynamic is undeniably charming, filled with oblivious flirting and a slow-burn romance that I found incredibly endearing. I especially enjoyed how the author explored the MC's past trauma and his fear of love, contrasting it with the ML's steadfast devotion. Their bond felt like a beacon of hope amidst the surrounding darkness.
Many readers also seem to appreciate the translation quality, which is consistently praised for its ability to evoke vivid imagery and capture the nuances of the characters' emotions. I found myself completely immersed in the world, thanks in no small part to the translator's skillful work.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the romance, I can see why some readers might find the plot a bit rushed, especially towards the end. The external conflicts, such as the MC's business negotiations and the ML's family issues, are resolved rather quickly, leaving me wanting more. I would have loved to see these aspects explored in greater depth.
Some also feel that the MC becomes overly reliant on the ML, losing some of his initial strength and independence. While I understand that his trauma plays a role in this, I can appreciate why some readers might find it frustrating.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviews discuss the ending and the resolution of the MC's trauma. It's worth noting that his fears of blood, water, and love seemingly vanish rather quickly after meeting the ML, which some readers found unrealistic and even triggering.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "A Scumbag Always Gets What He Deserves" is a charming and enjoyable read, especially if you're a fan of fluffy romance and don't mind a bit of melodrama. While the plot could be more developed and the character development isn't perfect, the sweet and heartwarming relationship between the MC and ML makes it a worthwhile experience. I'd recommend going in with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the fluff.
