Yesterday was like Death Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
## My Thoughts on Yesterday was like Death
"Yesterday was like Death" is a rollercoaster of emotions that had me hooked from beginning to end, even if it occasionally left me wanting to throw my Kindle across the room. It's a story packed with drama, a healthy dose of angst, and characters that are deeply flawed, yet ultimately endearing.
### First Impressions
I went into this novel knowing it was going to be a wild ride, and it definitely delivered. The premise is classic dogblood: a contract relationship, amnesia, a scorned ex, and a protagonist with a tragic past. It felt familiar, but the author managed to put a unique spin on the familiar tropes, making it feel fresh and engaging. I was immediately drawn to Gu Tang, the MC, a sassy and resourceful actor who's had to fight for everything he has.
### What Works Well
The characters are the heart of this story. Gu Tang is far from perfect, but his flaws make him relatable. I loved his sharp wit and the way he navigates the cutthroat entertainment industry. The ML, Xi Zonghe, is more complicated. While his amnesiac behavior can be frustrating, I appreciated his character development and how he eventually comes to terms with his feelings. The chemistry between the two is undeniable, even when they're at each other's throats.
I found the exploration of their past relationship through flashbacks to be particularly well done. It added layers of depth to their present struggles and made me root for them even harder. The author excels at creating those small, heartbreaking moments that really tug at your heartstrings.
### Areas of Concern
While I mostly enjoyed the heavy drama, I can see how it might not be for everyone. There are moments of non-con that could be triggering for some readers, and the plot can get pretty convoluted at times. I also felt like the ML could have groveled a bit more after regaining his memories.
### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might find certain plot elements problematic. There is a mention of a sci-fi element where men can have children. Also, a side character commits r*pe as revenge, which is understandably disturbing and unnecessary.
### Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Yesterday was like Death" is a compelling and addictive read. If you're a fan of angsty stories with morally grey characters, flawed protagonists, and a satisfying (albeit hard-earned) happy ending, I'd recommend giving this novel a try. Just be prepared to shed a few tears along the way. I'm rating it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
