Lin Wuyu is the academic god of his high school: calm, confident, and forever effortlessly able to get first place. Ding Ji flaunts his excellent memory and specializes in the art of hoodwinking others through fortune telling.
These two people who initially don’t have anything in common meet due to the spinning gears of fate.
Lin Wuyu discovers that the seemingly sloppy, careless Ding Ji is in fact outstandingly smart. After a series of hilarious misunderstandings, the reason why Ding Ji is unwilling to be called a prodigy gradually reveals itself. Two equally clever and exceptional teens, with similar yet not completely identical family troubles, slowly grow closer as they deepen their understanding of each other, little by little.
—
The author’s writing is humorous, with a natural, flowing style. The personalities of these two sharply contrasting teens appear vividly and realistically on paper. Lin Wuyu’s occasional childishness under his cool-headed academic god appearance and Ding Ji’s kindheartedness and liveliness that can’t be concealed by his street king energy are revealed by the author’s various and amusing plots.

## My Thoughts on Unbridled
"Unbridled" is a coming-of-age story that really grabbed my attention with its focus on two exceptionally smart young men navigating the complexities of family, friendship, and self-discovery. It's a blend of slice-of-life, romance, and drama, and while it has its slower moments, the overall experience is definitely worthwhile.
### First Impressions
Initially, I wasn’t entirely sold. The beginning can feel a bit slow, almost like an overload of information, yet somehow also lacking pace. There's a lot thrown at you early on, establishing the backgrounds and personalities of Lin Wuyu and Ding Ji. However, I'm glad I stuck with it because once the story finds its rhythm, it becomes incredibly engaging.
### What Works Well
The strength of "Unbridled" lies in its characters and their relationships. Lin Wuyu and Ding Ji are both incredibly well-developed, with distinct personalities and relatable struggles. Their friendship is the heart of the novel, and I particularly enjoyed how naturally their relationship evolved. The banter between them is fantastic, often funny and always feeling authentic. I also appreciated that the story doesn't rush into romance. The slow-burn approach allows for a deeper connection to form, making their eventual relationship feel earned. Many readers have pointed out that the side characters, especially Ding Ji's grandmother and his best friend, are also standouts, adding depth and warmth to the story. The author also tackles some serious themes, like difficult family dynamics and the pressures of being a gifted child, with sensitivity and nuance.
### Areas of Concern
While I mostly enjoyed the novel, the pacing in the second half did falter slightly for me. After the characters get together, some of the initial spark seems to fade, and there were moments where I felt a bit disconnected from their emotions. Also, both sets of parents are truly awful, and reading about their behavior can be frustrating.
### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may find the actions of the parents, especially Lin Wuyu's, to be particularly upsetting, and they play a significant role in the plot. The fact that Lin Wuyu was outed by his parents is a point of contention.
### Final Verdict
Despite some minor pacing issues and frustrating family dynamics, I found "Unbridled" to be a heartwarming and ultimately satisfying read. The well-developed characters, realistic relationships, and exploration of complex themes make it a worthwhile experience. If you're a fan of slice-of-life stories with a touch of drama and a focus on character development, I'd definitely recommend giving "Unbridled" a try.
