Description

Isaki just broke up with the man of his dreams he’d been continuously chasing after for more than ten years. One day, when he decides he doesn’t want to fall in love for a while, he becomes drinking buddies with Yasuhara, who lives in the neighborhood, after sharing a table with him at an izakaya. Yasuhara has a laidback and gentle personality, and aside from the fact that he’s older, he is a far cry from Isaki’s ideal type. They enjoy a comfortable friendship but….? Spin-off to Kiraina Otoko

Tonari no Otoko Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on Tonari no Otoko Alright, let's dive into "Tonari no Otoko," a completed BL novel that I recently finished. After seeing the buzz around it, especially as a spin-off, I was eager to see what it had to offer. Overall, it was a pleasant, quick read, perfect for when you're in the mood for something sweet and relatively low-angst. ### First Impressions My initial impression was that this story was going to focus on healing and moving on, and I wasn't wrong. We meet Isaki at a pivotal moment: he's finally cutting ties with Kagami, a man who's been a source of heartache for a decade due to his infidelity. This sets the stage for Isaki's journey to find genuine happiness. ### What Works Well What I particularly enjoyed was the development of the relationship between Isaki and Yasuhara. It starts off with them becoming drinking buddies, a comfortable and natural foundation for something more. Yasuhara is a genuinely kind and supportive character, and seeing Isaki slowly open his heart to him was heartwarming. The author does a good job of portraying the gradual shift from friendship to romance, making it feel believable and earned. The added bonus of getting Yasuhara's POV in the epilogue chapters was a great touch. It gave me a deeper understanding of his feelings and motivations, enhancing the overall experience. ### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning Okay, before I continue, a heads up: there are a couple of potentially triggering elements in this story. There's mention of past adultery, which, given the context of Isaki's relationship with Kagami, could be upsetting for some. There is also an attempted r*pe scene, though thankfully, it doesn't go very far. ### Final Verdict Despite these darker elements, "Tonari no Otoko" is ultimately a story about finding love and happiness after heartbreak. If you're looking for a short, sweet, and fluffy BL romance with some mature themes sprinkled in, this might be right up your alley. Just be aware of the potential triggers I mentioned earlier. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
