Sword of the Philosopher Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on Sword of the Philosopher "Sword of the Philosopher" presents an interesting premise: a reincarnation story where the protagonist finds himself in the body of a minor character in a game he knows intimately. The core concept of navigating the world with pre-existing knowledge and trying to avoid a pre-determined fate definitely piqued my interest. However, the execution appears to be a bit of a mixed bag. ### First Impressions Initially, I was drawn in by the idea of an overpowered character deliberately trying *not* to be the hero, instead opting to manipulate events from behind the scenes. The slow-burn approach and the focus on world-building also seemed promising. The potential for a grand strategy, with the MC guiding a chosen hero while avoiding his own demise, was definitely appealing. ### What Works Well The world-building seems to be a strong point. There's a clear effort to establish the rules and mechanics of the game world, which is a plus for readers who enjoy detailed fantasy settings. I also appreciate the initial setup of having multiple "hero" candidates, which adds a layer of intrigue and allows for various story paths. The concept of the MC using his knowledge to navigate dangerous situations and avoid death flags is compelling. The translator's note about the author reworking earlier misses later in the story also gives me hope for improved writing in later chapters. ### Areas of Concern Several concerns arise regarding the pacing and character development. The story seems to suffer from a lack of depth, with characters feeling bland and forgettable. The MC's personality seems to be lacking, and the supporting characters don't appear to get much attention either. The MC's reluctance to deviate from the original plot, even when a better outcome is possible, can be frustrating. The slow pace and "wall of text" without much progress in the story are also potential turn-offs. Finally, it seems that the quality of the translation may drop off significantly after a certain point, which could make it difficult to fully enjoy the story. ### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning Some reviews mention spoilers regarding the MC's inability to defeat the Demon King due to a specific setting element. This limitation apparently restricts the MC's freedom and makes his overpowered status somewhat meaningless. Be aware of this before diving in! ### Final Verdict "Sword of the Philosopher" has an interesting premise with potential, but its execution appears to be flawed. The slow pacing, bland characters, and potential translation issues are significant drawbacks. However, if you enjoy detailed world-building and a protagonist who manipulates events from the shadows, it might be worth checking out, especially if the author's later revisions address the earlier issues. I'd recommend reading a few chapters to see if it clicks with your tastes before committing fully. I'm giving it a tentative 3/5.
