The term “unrequited love” refers to a very fragile situation in which both parties are unaware of each other’s feelings, causing all sorts of misunderstandings.
Kuzuhara Kuzuo is a second-year high schooler. A genius born into an extremely poor family. He plays the role of an unintelligent student because “A knife that is too sharp can unintentionally hurt those around it.”
Shirayuki Tohka is also a second-year high schooler. She’s a mediocre student born into one of the most influential families in Japan. If she didn’t live up to the high expectations of the people around her, she wouldn’t be recognized by her family, so she played the role of a genius.
The two childhood friends, opposites in nature, were separated when they graduated elementary school, eventually reuniting in high school.
At first, it was awkward, but… Studying together in the student council room, going out on holidays, catching a cold and caring for one another—they get drawn to each other by the parts they lack, and their feelings slowly develop.
This is a “coming-of-age romcom” about two people who pretend to be something they’re not, but gradually take off their masks and start to develop feelings for each other.

My Childhood Friend, Snow White, Doesn’t Realize Her Unrequited Love Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
## My Thoughts on *My Childhood Friend, Snow White, Doesn’t Realize Her Unrequited Love*
Alright, let's dive into *My Childhood Friend, Snow White, Doesn’t Realize Her Unrequited Love*. It's a mouthful of a title, and the story itself is… well, complicated. I went in expecting a fluffy rom-com, and while it certainly has those elements, there's a bit more going on under the surface that left me feeling conflicted.
### First Impressions
Initially, I was charmed. The premise is classic – childhood friends, one oblivious, the other harboring secret feelings. Snow White, the female lead, is undeniably beautiful and seems to have a genuine affection for our protagonist. The early chapters are filled with lighthearted moments and comedic misunderstandings, which definitely pulled me in.
### What Works Well
The comedic timing is pretty spot-on. I found myself chuckling at the situations the characters found themselves in. The slice-of-life aspect is also well-executed. The author does a good job of portraying everyday school life and the dynamics between friends. The protagonist's caring nature is also a definite plus. He's not some cold, aloof genius; he genuinely cares about the people around him, which makes him relatable, despite some of his… less relatable traits.
### Areas of Concern
However, as I read further, some issues started to surface. The biggest one for me was the protagonist's supposed genius. He's portrayed as this incredibly intelligent individual with a photographic memory, yet he's struggling financially and working a seemingly mundane job. It felt a little contradictory and, honestly, a bit forced. It felt like the author was bending over backwards to create situations where the protagonist could show off his intelligence, even when it didn't quite fit the narrative. It also felt like the MC's "stupidity" was contrived. It didn't make much sense why he'd act oblivious when being more straightforward would likely improve his life. It was a bit frustrating to watch.
### Final Verdict
Overall, *My Childhood Friend, Snow White, Doesn’t Realize Her Unrequited Love* has potential, but it needs some refinement. The core concept is appealing, and the comedic elements are well-done. However, the inconsistencies in the protagonist's character and the somewhat contrived plot points hold it back. I'm on the fence about continuing, but I'm hoping the author can address some of these issues as the story progresses. It's a 3/5 for me.
