## My Thoughts on Lapis no Shinzou
After diving into "Lapis no Shinzou," I've come away with a mixed bag of feelings, but overall, I think it's a web novel with a lot of potential. It's not without its flaws, but the strengths certainly make it worth checking out, especially if you're a fan of fantasy with a darker edge.
### First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise – a protagonist, Shou, with a disfigured face and a harsh upbringing, trained as an assassin. It definitely sidesteps the usual reincarnation tropes, which is always a plus for me. The early chapters set a dreary, almost melancholic tone that I found intriguing. However, I also noticed some early missteps. Some of the initial plot points feel a little forced, like Shou's departure from his master, and his re-entry into society without much planning.
### What Works Well
The world-building is a definite highlight. The author has created a detailed society with a magic system tied to nobility, and intriguing monsters lurking in the shadows. I really appreciate the effort put into making the world feel alive and intricate. Shou's character development, while sometimes frustrating, is also a strong point. He starts as a naive and somewhat apathetic character but gradually begins to grapple with human connections and finding his place in the world. The action sequences are well-written, and the pacing, while occasionally slow, generally keeps me engaged. I also appreciate that Shou isn't an overpowered pushover, which is a refreshing change from many JP fantasy novels. The relationships he forms, though potentially leaning towards a harem situation, are complex and add depth to the story.
### Areas of Concern
My biggest reservation comes from the potential harem elements that seem to be creeping into the story. While not explicitly tagged as a harem, some character interactions feel unnecessary and cliché. There are also moments where Shou's decision-making is questionable, making him come across as frustratingly passive at times. The slow pacing can also be a drag, especially when coupled with overly descriptive passages. I also found the main character to be a bit bland at times, and the excessive descriptions can be a chore to read.
### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out specific scenes, such as a high-ranking female officer obsessing over Shou's underwear, as evidence of the creeping harem elements. Others have mentioned that Shou's master is an assassin that could have taught him how to control his emotions.
### Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Lapis no Shinzou" has a lot to offer. The detailed world-building, complex characters, and intriguing plot kept me invested, even when I was frustrated by some of the story's choices. If you're willing to overlook the potential harem elements and occasional pacing issues, you might find yourself enjoying this dark fantasy novel. I'm giving it a solid 4/5, with the hope that the author will continue to refine the story and avoid falling into tired tropes.
