Genius Detective Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on Genius Detective "Genius Detective" is a web novel that definitely grabbed my attention with its premise: a genius cop framed and forced to go underground, only to re-emerge as a consultant, solving crimes while slowly unraveling the conspiracy against him. I've read my fair share of detective novels, and I was eager to dive into this one. ### First Impressions Initially, I was hooked. The main character, despite his circumstances, is pretty engaging. He's not your typical brooding detective; he's got a sense of humor and a pragmatic approach to justice, which I found refreshing. The cases, at first, were satisfying, and I found myself trying to piece together the clues alongside him. It felt like a decent crime procedural. ### What Works Well The author does a good job of creating a world filled with intriguing characters. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between the MC and a few of the supporting characters. The cases themselves are well-plotted, if sometimes a little gruesome, and the protagonist's cleverness is definitely a draw. The slow-burn romance is a plus for those who prefer the focus to remain on the mystery, and I appreciated that it didn't overshadow the main plot. I found the translation to be well-done, capturing both the nuances of the language and the cultural context. ### Areas of Concern However, as I read further, some issues started to surface. The episodic nature of the story, while initially appealing, began to feel repetitive. The overall plot progression felt incredibly slow, and I longed for more substantial development regarding the MC's past. Some of the cases, while initially engaging, became somewhat formulaic, with the MC seemingly knowing the answers from the start, leaving little room for reader speculation. I also found the female lead to be a bit underdeveloped, lacking the depth and growth I hoped for. ### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning There's a pretty big plot point that I need to discuss, but be warned, it contains spoilers! >!The MC's reason for going into hiding felt a bit weak. It seemed out of character for a "genius" detective to simply run away without seeking revenge or thoroughly investigating his framing. The method he used to change his appearance, and the coincidental meeting with the person whose face he copied, felt contrived and lessened the impact of the story.!< ### Final Verdict Overall, "Genius Detective" is a decent read if you're a fan of crime procedurals and enjoy a clever protagonist. However, be prepared for a slow-burn plot, some underdeveloped characters, and occasional plot contrivances. While it kept me entertained for a while, the issues ultimately prevented me from fully investing in the story. I'd recommend it with reservations, suggesting you temper your expectations going in.
