Concealed by Brocaded Clouds, Frost on the Roads Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on Concealed by Brocaded Clouds, Frost on the Roads This novel is quite a ride, and I'm left with mixed feelings after finishing it. It's one of those stories that burrows under your skin, even if you're not entirely sure you *like* being burrowed under. It's a tragic romance set in ancient China, full of court intrigue, betrayal, and a second chance... or is it? ### First Impressions I went in expecting a historical romance, and that's partially what I got. The beginning is fairly engaging, setting up the initial relationship between the main characters. However, the story quickly takes a darker turn. I found myself quickly invested in the female lead's fate, even as I questioned some of the choices she made. ### What Works Well The writing itself is quite beautiful, and the pacing, while sometimes uneven, kept me reading. The author excels at creating a tense atmosphere, and there were definitely moments that tugged at my heartstrings. The second part of the story, after the initial tragedy, was particularly compelling. I appreciated the mystery surrounding the female lead's new identity and the slow reveal of the truth. The exploration of revenge and its consequences is also a strong point. The complexities of the characters were really well done. ### Areas of Concern My biggest issue lies with the male lead. His actions are often questionable, even reprehensible, and it's difficult to fully root for him, even during his "redemption" arc. I struggled to understand his motivations at times, and his behavior often felt contradictory. I also felt the ending was a bit abrupt and unsatisfying, leaving me wanting more closure. I also felt that the author relied too heavily on melodramatic tropes. ### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning Okay, here comes the spoiler territory! The whole "rape and abuse but it's okay because he loves her" trope is problematic. I also found the circumstances surrounding the female lead's "death" and subsequent reappearance a bit convoluted. The epilogue about the *real* Mu Ningyan was absolutely wild though, and I honestly found it more interesting than the main story at that point. ### Final Verdict "Concealed by Brocaded Clouds, Frost on the Roads" is a flawed but ultimately engaging read. If you're a fan of tragic romances with morally grey characters and don't mind a bit of melodrama, you might enjoy it. However, be prepared for some uncomfortable themes and a male lead that will test your patience. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, knowing that it won't be for everyone.
