1970s Gangster Couple Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on 1970s Gangster Couple "1970s Gangster Couple" certainly took me on a ride! This novel, with its blend of adult themes, romance, and a dash of fantasy set against the backdrop of 1970s China, is definitely unique. I went in expecting a heavy plot, but it's more of a fluffy, feel-good story, and honestly, I'm not mad about it. ### First Impressions The initial chapters really grabbed my attention. The relationship between Xiao Xiao and Wang Wei is undeniably cute. Watching their bond develop, with Wang Wei's tsun-tsun personality and Xiao Xiao's teasing, made for some seriously sweet moments. The premise of an interstellar woman transmigrating into a 1970s setting also offered a unique twist on the typical farming novel. ### What Works Well The devoted love interests are a major draw. Wang Wei is incredibly supportive, and the couple's dynamic is a highlight. I also appreciated that the story, at least initially, focused on China's technological advancements during that era rather than solely on farming and making money. The female lead is portrayed as a genius scientist, and it's refreshing to see her career take center stage with her love interest being a supportive partner. ### Areas of Concern However, I have to admit that the story does lose some of its initial charm as it progresses. Some found the FL's character development a bit too extreme, bordering on Mary Sue territory. Her accomplishments become almost unbelievable for the setting, which can strain suspension of disbelief. There's also a shift in focus later on, with the plot delving into Chinese nationalism and, according to some, even becoming xenophobic. While understandable given the historical context, this shift may not appeal to all readers. The male lead also becomes less prominent as the story progresses, which is a shame considering how enjoyable his character was in the beginning. The ending also felt rushed and unsatisfying for some. ### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning Some readers felt that the story took a nosedive after the couple moved to the city. The original charm of their relationship fades, and the plot becomes more focused on the FL's scientific achievements, which can feel unrealistic. Some felt that the government's decision to keep revolutionary discoveries secret for military gain was a major turnoff. ### Final Verdict Overall, "1970s Gangster Couple" is a mixed bag. The first half is undeniably enjoyable, with a cute couple and a unique premise. However, the latter half suffers from pacing issues, character inconsistencies, and a shift in focus that may not appeal to all readers. I'd recommend it for a light, fluffy read, but be aware that the story's quality diminishes as it progresses. I'd give it a solid 3.5/5 stars.
